WGSN//megatrends AW 16/17.

E L E M E N T A L & the puffer jacket

WGSN describes the Elemental megatrend as "exploring the power of simplicity". There is a focus on the interrelationship between function and fashion through the use of fabrics which have stereotypically been used in the production of activewear. Elemental is quite a minimalist trend, with labels such as Cottweiler adapting the trend through a focus on "simplicity, fit and function".

From my research at Emporium, the elemental colour palette relates directly to the neutral colours of the puffer jackets currently displayed in stores. This palette is made up of muted tones, and whilst embracing colour, it is easy on the eye and avoids harsh tones.

Puffer Jackets can be associated with what WGSN labels 'Lab-Sport'. The trend embraces stark and sterile environments in order to project a mood onto streetwear pieces. Lab-sport encompasses simplified designs and unisex garments which are both characteristics of the puffer jacket.

The inflated trend relates directly to the puffer jacket as it speaks of characteristics such as volume and "pumped up" silhouetted that are "exaggerated and (literally) inflated to puffed proportions". WGSN explains that the inflated trend intends to "provide a cosy sense of protection".

Trend spotting at Emporium.

Leather Loving

(Coach)
Coach have used a biker vibe for their feature leather jacket through the use of bulky, thick, leather, zippers and press buttons. They are presenting the jacket as a statement piece, hanging on it's own in their shop display.

(Hugo Boss)
Hugo boss have styled their leather jacket with a pastel, floral dress. The jacket is fitted, yet has been left open to reveal the garment underneath which softens the leather.

(Versace)
Versace have paired their jacket with a leather skirt. The jacket has been zipped up and the sleeves have been pushed up to the elbow in order to convey a minimalist, yet sexy and put together look.

A Khaki Winter

(Nena and Pasadena)
NXP have gone for a skater, street vibe in the use of their camo and Khaki. They have used photography and a model in their front window in order to target a skater demographic. They have used Khaki with layering to introduce the colour and pattern in a subtle and wearable way.

(Hugo Boss)
Hugo boss have come up with a universally wearable design with this Khaki jacket. It is simple and practical and has been displayed in a way that shows off its versatility with the use of layering.

(Diesel)
Diesel have gone for a "his and hers" approach to their Khaki display. They are both slightly different tones with the female piece being more fitted with a longer hem and the male jacket being more loose fitting and chunky.

Puffy Puffers

(Industrie)
Industrie have incorporated both the puffer and khaki trends in this look. They have gone for a very wearable, casual, every day vibe for men with this vest, layered over a denim shirt and grey t-shirt.

(Ecolite)
Ecolite have styled this jacket in order to portray the practicality of the piece.

(Uniqlo)
This piece has been paired with casual, street garments in order to portray it as a practical, yet fashionable piece.

Collage LOVE

(Images via Pinterest)

Not only does Pinterest give me hours of entertainment and inspiration; it also doubles as an incredible database for fashion collages and images. Creating these simple collages gives me so much style inspiration and almost acts as mini, quick and easy mood boards.
